Hints for the games of SOLMENU1 (c) 1990 by Karl Meadows
CANFIELD
1. When faced with playing a hand card or a stock card, always play the stock
card. Try to play the stock cards as soon as possible.
2. Remember the cards are dealt three at a time, so playing just one card will
change the order you will see the cards the next time through, possibly
allowing more plays.
GOLF
1. Kings can only be played on Queens, so survey the tableau for the number of
Kings and Queens showing. Save enough Queens to play the Kings on (don't
be tempted to play your Queens on Jacks).
2. When faced with playing a card from a column with other cards or a column
with just one card, choose the column with other cards so as to expose
those other cards.
3. When faced with playing a card upward or a different card downward, try to
look forward a few moves to see which would result in more cards being
removed.
MONTE CARLO
1. When removing pairs, try to visualize what the tableau will look like after
you close up the gaps. There is no requirement that all possible pairs be
removed before re-dealing the cards.
2. Be especially careful near the end of the game, so that you don't end up
with two pairs such as K4K4, which are impossible to remove.
GRAND DUCHESS
1. When faced with the choice of playing the same card upward or downward,
first check which choice will result in the most plays, secondly choose the
pile which has the fewest cards in it already.
2. When scavenging the fifth pile (the one spread out) remember that you can
still play cards in the first four piles.
FROG
1. Try to reserve one pile for just Kings.
2. Try to place the cards in descending order as much as possible, so when an
opportunity to play to the foundation arises, a series of cards will play.
3. ALWAYS play cards from the reserve whenever possible.
